• Recheck opening times, sea state and the weather 48-72 hours before each outdoor day. In October, weather should decide the order of the boat and hiking days.

Day 1: Fri 16 Oct - Olbia To Cala Gonone

Theme: arrive and position yourselves for the wild east coast.

Drive: Olbia Airport to Cala Gonone, about 106-130 km and 1h30-1h45. The final road is winding; treat this as a quiet positioning night.

Day 2: Sat 17 Oct - Orgosolo And Autunno In Barbagia

Theme: living Sardinian culture: murals, mountain identity, food, craft and courtyards.

• 09:00: leave Cala Gonone.
• 10:15-15:30: Orgosolo and Autunno in Barbagia.
• 16:00-17:30: optional MAN Museum, Nuoro if the family still has energy; otherwise take the scenic return.
• Evening: back in Cala Gonone.

Drive: Cala Gonone to Orgosolo, about 55-65 km and 1h10-1h30 each way.

Why this day matters: it is the trip’s strongest chance to experience culture happening rather than merely being displayed. The Orgosolo murals add a vivid visual and political-art strand for the boys as well as the adults.

Day 3: Sun 18 Oct - Gola Di Gorropu

Theme: the major canyon day: a scale change from the coastal drama.

• 08:00-08:30: leave Cala Gonone for the chosen access point.
• 09:00-15:30: hike into Gola di Gorropu, explore the accessible gorge, then hike back or use a booked 4WD return.
• Evening: unhurried recovery in Cala Gonone.

Drive: Cala Gonone to the Ghenna Silana / canyon access area, roughly 45-60 minutes.

Recommendation: take a local guide for the full Ghenna Silana version. A guide is not essential for a dry-day, conservative visit to the green section, but it improves this particular family day: the path is rocky, the inner canyon requires boulder judgement, and the guide turns geology, endemic plants and Nuragic landscape into an actual story. It also makes a 4WD uphill return easy to arrange if legs are spent. The official Gorropu concessionaire offers treks and off-road transfers; Ghivine is a long-running Cala Gonone operator for Supramonte, Gorropu and Tiscali trekking.

Plan: the Passo Ghenna Silana descent is the best story-rich version: big limestone views, a proper hike, then the sensation of entering a narrow geological world. See the hiking appendix for the alternative routes; rock underfoot and weather matter.

Day 4: Mon 19 Oct - Golfo Di Orosei By Small Boat

Theme: see the cliffs, caves and roadless coves from the only viewpoint that makes their scale obvious, without taking the standard passenger-transport boat.

Recommended booked experience: small RIB mini-cruise. Ask for an 8-metre dinghy trip capped at 12 guests, rather than a large ferry-style outing. The best route is Cala Luna -> Cala Biriola / Piscine di Venere -> Cala Mariolu / Cala dei Gabbiani -> panoramic Cala Goloritzé. It gives the skipper the freedom to choose a sheltered swimming or beach stop rather than reproduce a rigid timetable.

Two operators/styles to ask about:

• Dovesesto / Agostino Charter: its 8-metre dinghy mini-cruise is the closest fit to the small-group brief. The same operator also runs the historic 23-metre Dovesesto sailing boat, which is slower, more graceful and more story-like; choose it if atmosphere matters more than covering maximum coastline.
• Consorzio Noleggiatori Cala Gonone: offers guided dinghy tours and exclusive boats. Ask specifically for a small RIB or private/family departure, not its large motorboat product.

Independent alternative: 40 hp self-drive RIB. Collect at Porto di Cala Gonone and use Bue Marino -> Cala Luna -> Cala Sisine -> Cala Mariolu / Cala dei Gabbiani -> harbour. It gives you complete control of pace, but skip Cala Goloritzé in a 10:00-16:00 plan unless the sea is exceptionally flat. Confirm landing rules, fuel, return time and wind forecast with the renter.

Drive: Villa Gustui Maris to the harbour is a short local drive or walk. Do not book the regular multi-stop passenger ferry for this day; its virtue is capacity, not the pace or atmosphere you are seeking.

Day 5: Tue 20 Oct - Dorgali’s Ancient Village And Underground World

Primary plan: Serra Orrios + Grotta di Ispinigoli.

• 09:30-11:30: Serra Orrios, a legible Nuragic village rather than a single isolated tower. It is a useful complement to the coast: homes, meeting spaces and everyday social organisation.
• 12:00-13:15: relaxed Dorgali lunch.
• 14:00-15:30: Grotta di Ispinigoli: a cathedral-like chamber and its famous 38-metre stalagmite.
• Late afternoon: Dorgali ceramics / cafe, or return to Cala Gonone for a final sea-front evening.

Drive: each stop is about 20-30 minutes from Villa Gustui Maris; this is intentionally an easy final east-coast day.

Alternative, only if the family wants a second major walking day: replace the primary plan with the Tiscali hike. It combines a hidden Nuragic settlement with a striking limestone landscape, but it is the more demanding commitment. The hiking appendix explains the trade-off.

Day 6: Wed 21 Oct - Cala Gonone To Cannigione

Theme: an easy northbound transfer and first taste of a liveable, polished northern base.

• 10:00: leave Cala Gonone after a slow breakfast.
• 12:30-13:00: arrive at Resort Cala di Falco, Cannigione; leave bags or check in when the room is ready.
• Afternoon: Cannigione harbour, a swim/pool break if weather invites it, then an easy first look at nearby Baja Sardinia or San Pantaleo.

Drive: Cala Gonone to Cannigione, approximately 125-145 km and 2h15-2h45, depending on route and stops.

Do not force La Prisgiona or Coddu Vecchiu into this transfer. They sit in the Arzachena area and can be reached with a manageable detour, but they are already the core of Day 9. Keeping them there gives them the attention they deserve and protects the pleasant arrival at Cala di Falco.

Olbia: a conditional, short stop only. It is not an essential city day for this trip, but it is worthwhile if you want a 60-90 minute break and the hours work: the Archaeological Museum on the Peddone islet and the Romanesque Basilica / San Simplicio necropolis tell a compact story of Phoenician, Roman and medieval Olbia. Do it only if you leave early and confirm opening hours. Otherwise, head straight to Cannigione; this hotel has a pool, beach and marina on its doorstep, which is the better first-afternoon reward.

Why Cannigione works: it is less stage-set than Porto Cervo, but has a real marina and village life, while keeping Palau, La Maddalena, Arzachena and Costa Smeralda within easy reach. Cala di Falco is about 300 m from Cannigione’s shops and marina.

Day 7: Thu 22 Oct - La Maddalena And Caprera By Car

Theme: a proper island day: maritime town, granite landscape and one wild Caprera beach or walk.

• 08:15: drive to Palau and take the car ferry.
• 09:30-11:00: La Maddalena town: Cala Gavetta harbour, the lanes behind it, Piazza Comando and the old naval waterfront.
• 11:00-12:00: lunch or provisions, then drive across the causeway to Caprera.
• 12:30-16:00: choose one destination: Cala Napoletana for the more straightforward wild-beach hike, or Cala Coticcio only with an authorised guide booked in advance.
• 16:30-18:00: return ferry and drive to Cannigione.

Drive: Cannigione to Palau, about 20 km and 25-30 minutes. The ferry crossing is around 15 minutes; verify the timetable and vehicle boarding process before departure.

Day 8: Fri 23 Oct - Costa Smeralda’s Quiet Luxury

Theme: Sardinia’s most polished coastal culture, approached as a beautiful driving and people-watching day rather than a resort checklist.

• Late morning: San Pantaleo: granite village, galleries, studios and lunch.
• Afternoon: Porto Cervo, marina and Piazzetta; then Poltu Quatu or Baja Sardinia for the contrast in architecture and coastline.
• Late afternoon: Capriccioli, Liscia Ruja or Pevero viewpoints; choose the one that best matches the light and weather.

Drive: Cannigione to San Pantaleo, about 30 km and 40 minutes; San Pantaleo to Porto Cervo, about 20 km and 25-35 minutes.

How to use October: embrace the calm. The point is an elegant late lunch, a marina walk, and a granite coast seen without summer traffic, not trying to manufacture high-season nightlife.

Day 9: Sat 24 Oct - Arzachena Archaeology And Capo Testa

Primary plan: the north’s most rewarding compact archaeology, followed by its strangest coastal geology.

• 09:30-11:00: Nuraghe La Prisgiona: a fortified settlement that makes Nuragic society visible.
• 11:15-12:00: Coddu Vecchiu, a Giant’s Tomb with a remarkable stone facade.
• 12:00-13:30: lunch around Arzachena or Santa Teresa Gallura.
• 14:30-17:00: Capo Testa, with short walks among wind-shaped granite, inlets and views towards Corsica; finish in Santa Teresa Gallura.

Drive: Cannigione to La Prisgiona, about 10 km and 15 minutes. Arzachena to Capo Testa, roughly 55 km and 1h-1h15. Capo Testa back to Cannigione, around 60 km and 1h15.

Boat alternative: if the forecast makes this the best sea day, replace the entire day with a Palau departure. The realistic options are described in the boat appendix: either a 40 hp self-drive outer-islands route or an operator-led tour. Do not combine it with Capo Testa or archaeology.

Day 10: Sun 25 Oct - Olbia Departure

• 08:25: flight departure.

Drive: Cannigione to Olbia Airport, around 30-35 km and 35-45 minutes. Confirm the rental-car drop-off procedure before the day.

Optional Hiking Menu: Choose Only One In Place Of Day 5

This is a menu, not extra work to squeeze into the itinerary. Day 5 exists to give the family weather and energy flexibility after Gorropu.

Serra Orrios + Ispinigoli: Recommended

This is the easiest and most balanced substitute: an unusually well-preserved Nuragic village followed by a deep cave with an extraordinary stalagmite. It creates two clear stories for children in one low-stress day.

Tiscali: The Strong Second Hiking Day

Tiscali is for a family who leaves Gorropu wanting more: a hike through limestone country to a settlement hidden in a collapsed doline. It is more adventurous and more mysterious than Serra Orrios, but it needs proper footwear, water, weather judgement and a genuinely willing group.

Cala Goloritzé: The Protected-Cove Hike

This is iconic but should replace, not supplement, the programme. The descent from Su Porteddu is around 3.5 km with roughly 500 m elevation change; the return is a hard uphill. A permit is required, capacity is controlled, and booking normally opens only three days before. Official Baunei booking information and trail information.

Cala Luna / Bue Marino / Ziu Santoru: The Sea-Cliff Walk

Start at Cala Fuili, south of Cala Gonone, and follow the coastal trail towards Cala Luna. It is about two hours one way with rocky ups and downs above the sea; the elegant version is to walk out and return to Cala Gonone by boat, if services operate. Sardegna Sentieri route notes.

Pedra Longa: The Granite-And-Limestone Coast

Pedra Longa is a 128-metre limestone pinnacle above the sea and the threshold to the Selvaggio Blu world. Drive there for a short high-reward stop, or choose a more serious guided walk from Santa Maria Navarrese. It is spectacular, but far enough south that it replaces rather than joins the Cala Gonone core programme. Official information.

Gorropu Via Ghenna Silana: The Main Canyon Hike

This remains Day 4, but is listed here for decision-making. It delivers the biggest descent and canyon payoff; a 4WD return is a sensible option if the boys are tired after boulder-hopping inside the gorge.

Optional Boat Days And Weather Fallbacks

Primary Boat Day: Cala Gonone Self-Drive, Day 3

Best departure: Porto di Cala Gonone, a short local trip from Villa Gustui Maris. A licence-free 40 hp RIB is the right independent option in calm weather.

Recommended route: Bue Marino -> Cala Luna -> Cala Sisine -> Cala Mariolu / Cala dei Gabbiani -> harbour. Do not add Cala Goloritzé to a 10:00-16:00 plan unless the sea is exceptionally flat and you accept a rushed day.

The trade-off is worthwhile here because the Gulf of Orosei’s roadless cliffs and coves reveal their full shape from water. Confirm beach-landing rules, environmental contributions, fuel, return time and wind forecast directly with the renter. Interactive boat map.

Northern Backup: Palau, Day 9 Instead Of Capo Testa

Leave from Palau Marina. This is a replacement for the entire Day 9 land programme, never an add-on.

• Self-drive 40 hp: the flexible choice if you are comfortable with open-water navigation and anchoring. Keep to an outer-islands route: Spargi, Santa Maria, Porto della Madonna and any rule-compliant Budelli viewpoints.
• Operator-run small boat or group tour: the calmer choice if you want to see more of the archipelago without navigating, anchoring or monitoring return range yourself. In late October, availability and the operator’s weather decision will be decisive.

Neither is a good way to combine the outer islands with Caprera’s icons. The car-ferry Day 7 is the right plan for La Maddalena town and Caprera. Interactive boat map and La Maddalena National Park.

Day 1–3: Cala Gonone, Orgosolo and Gorropu

Olbia Airport

Arrival and departure gateway. Transavia HV 6911 arrives from Amsterdam at 21:35 on Friday 16 October; collect the car and make the quiet first-night drive to Cala Gonone. Transavia HV 6916 departs for Amsterdam at 08:25 on Sunday 25 October, so confirm the rental-car return procedure before leaving Cannigione.

Villa Gustui Maris

Cala Gonone’s sea-view base for five nights. Its position gives you an easy harbour start for the Gulf of Orosei, a practical road into Dorgali and the Supramonte, and a calmer sea-front return after the canyon or boat days.

Orgosolo

Walk the mural-covered lanes slowly: the paintings give visual entry points into Sardinian politics, labour and mountain identity. During Autunno in Barbagia, add courtyard workshops, local food and the lived shepherding culture around the town.

Ghenna Silana

High Supramonte trailhead for the descent to the canyon.

Gola di Gorropu

The real payoff of the Ghenna Silana descent is the scale change: open Supramonte limestone gives way to a narrow gorge with towering walls and uneven boulder passages. A local guide adds geological context and makes a 4WD uphill return practical if energy drops.

Day 4–5: Gulf of Orosei and Dorgali

Cala Gonone harbour

Start for the Gulf of Orosei by small RIB or a licence-free self-drive boat. Before leaving, confirm wind, sea state, fuel, beach-landing rules and the realistic return time; October weather should determine the day’s exact sequence.

The boat day’s visual climax: pale pebbles, intensely clear water and cliffs that make it obvious why this coast feels roadless. Use the sheltered conditions to choose a relaxed swim and lunch stop rather than trying to collect every famous cove.

Deprioritized For This Trip

These are worthwhile places, not mistakes. They simply do not create enough additional value for the driving and hotel movement they require on this nine-night route.

• Bosa, Alghero and Grotta di Nettuno: colourful and distinctive, but a west-coast base would consume two nights for one truly full day. It weakens the Cala Gonone and northern experiences.
• Su Nuraxi di Barumini: Sardinia’s archaeological heavyweight and very unusual, but it would turn Day 5 into a transit-heavy transfer. Serra Orrios, La Prisgiona and Coddu Vecchiu give a varied Nuragic story with far less driving.
• Tharros, Cabras and the Mont’e Prama Giants: excellent as a Sinis-focused day, but too far west to combine honestly with this itinerary.
• Southwest and far south: Carloforte, Nebida / Masua / Porto Flavia, Chia and Pula deserve their own route rather than a 3.5-4 hour one-way detour from Cala Gonone.
• Tortoli / Arbatax: attractive but not strong enough to pull this itinerary away from the superior Cala Gonone coast and the north.
